I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that they spent alive with us on earth. Only those who loved and knew them know what that little line is worth. The measure of a man is not how much we own -- the cars...the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

Many of us know that Bob spent his time making the most of his dash.  The outpouring of love, respect, and sadness from family, friends, colleagues, and the people he touched showed the impact he had on everyone's life. While each of us will have our own stories to tell, a smile, a hug, a firm handshake or a shared pint, that little dash will remind each of us of the memories we shared and will cherish always.
